After a group lunch and a presentation by Dipl.-Ing. Volker Leonhard on the subject of electricity and district heating generation by WSW Energie & Wasser AG, the practical part of the excursion followed: a tour of the combined heat and power plant on Kabelstraße in Elberfeld. Exploring the heat and power plant with all its components from the inside met with great interest among the students. Finally, the students discussed with company representatives the expected closure of the combined heat and power plant in 2018.

The event took place within the framework of the Excursion weeks 2016. With the objective to enable students to inform themselves about career opportunities in companies in the Bergische region, the Bergische Universität Wuppertal together with the Chamber of Industry and Commerce Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid (IHK) is again offering excursion weeks this year. Eleven companies from the region will be opening their doors to interested students of all disciplines from 14 April to 25 May.

Students visit the Wuppertaler Stadtwerke GmbH

On 14.04.2016, around 30 students met at the main entrance of the Bergische Universität at Gaußstraße to visit the Wuppertaler Stadtwerke. Accompanied by Julia Lohre (Chamber of Industry and Commerce), Iris Rudolph (Transfer Office of the University of Wuppertal) and Andrea Bauhus (Career Service of the Bergische University), the bus transfer took them to the WSW main building on Brombergerstraße.

After a welcome by Sylvia Rath (Consultant for personnel marketing and university marketing), Prof. Dr. Norbert Hüttenhölscher introduced the company, and also spoke about new energy concepts.

Dipl. Kfm. Kai-Uwe Selberg (Head of "Market and Trade") also introduced the company to the students from the perspective of the market and trade. Viewing electricity as a product and above all from an entrepreneurial point of view proved to be both exciting and demanding for the students.

This was followed by a presentation by Sylvia Rath, in which she showed the range of possibilities offered by Wuppertal's Stadtwerke for career starters, Bachelor's and Master's theses and even interns. In a subsequent round of talks, the students had interesting and lively discussions with the company representatives about the topics covered previously; all questions from the students were answered in detail.
